ERNIE’S STORY

“We were looking for a Pug for months, online, through different breeders, even at pet stores. We saw an ad online for a black CKC registered male Pug who was ten weeks old for sale. We contacted the breeder and she told us that the people who took this little Pug home were allergic. We made arrangements to go see him the next day at the family’s home and instantly fell in love. He had big bug eyes, had lots of energy, and a great personality. We took him home that day! From the first day Ernie became our world, he was so sweet, mischievous, and had the best personality. Ernie LOVES food and will do anything for a treat. Anytime the fridge opens, you can bet he will be right there hoping for a carrot. Ernie was even able to win over family members who were not dog lovers, he is just that special. “

This is my first commissioned portrait of a person. The portrait was done from a photograph of Emma (as a young adult).

BRUNO’S STORY

“He was the small but mighty leader in a house of 10 dogs, mostly Labs and one Italian Spinone that adored Bruno but he didn’t have much patience for and ignored.  He held himself in a very regal and elegant way for such a small pug and separated himself from the pack by not overly seeking human attention.  Bruno would quietly join you on a couch for a movie if you were lucky – never one to nip or scratch at you as a petting request.   He was at the same time a spit fire and operated on his own independent schedule.  We thought he might be deaf during his early years but slowly figured out he has selective hearing when it pertains to what suits him best.  Bruno was sick during his last three years with different ailments and our vet said he couldn’t explain how he continued to bounce back.  My father claims he kept on living for my mother’s linguine.  A dining sight in itself as he had all but two major teeth remaining.  My very tough Italian father began taking Bruno everywhere with him.  Bruno softened him and replaced his immediate requests for grandkids.  He would ride shotgun on the weekends to our lake house and loved roaming the property, coming in for food and long naps only once there.  My brother eventually drove Bruno to the vet to be put down in his final days.  He rode shotgun while my brother opened the window for Bruno’s ritual sniff of fresh air.  After he took it in, he laid back down in the seat and passed away before they made it to the vet.  It was a passing true to his personality – on his own terms.  His urn is engraved “My Way”.”

CHARLIE’S STORY

“Charlie was the gentlest dog you could ever meet. He loved people, loved long walks on the beach (he lived in southern Georgian Bay), and was always wanting to please. He loved playing frisbee and watching the world go by from the deck, but was mostly just happy to be around his family. He was not at all demanding — the furthest from alpha dog that you can get. Perhaps some of this was a result of his background — my parents got him from an animal shelter, where he was brought after running away from his owner. The owner told the shelter they could keep the dog, and happily Charlie went on to have a wonderful life.”

“My parents love Charlie’s portrait, as I knew they would. It was a very emotional moment when they opened it, with tears all around. They think it’s beautiful, a very special gift in honour of a very special member of our family. It has now returned with them to Georgian Bay, where Charlie will again grace their home with his sweet and gentle presence. Thank you so much Paul. It really is beautiful.”

Jesse was commissioned by a former client of mine (Brody’s owner) and her sister as a surprise Christmas gift for their parents. The portrait will go in their Arizona vacation home. We chose this photo for the portrait because it’s so joyful, and apparently you can’t walk Jesse anywhere without him carrying that mitt!
